Regular maintenance to Whangaparapara Wharf on Aotea Great Barrier Island will begin on 16 April.

Work is expected to take 4-6 weeks and while efforts will be made to keep the area open, contractors may have to close it for safety reasons for short periods.

The work includes replacing 10 fender piles on the berthing face, replacing most of the bracing with new hardwood, and all fixings with stainless steel. Old bollards will be replaced, as will the deck’s 195 square metre top skin.

The work will be rounded out by a grouting undercut of the concrete ramp and replacement of its steel capping. Pile protection will be installed for the fuel system and ladders will be upgraded to aluminium.
