Improvements to the Mill Road corridor are crucial for the rapidly growing community already experiencing significant traffic congestion, says Papakura Local Board Chair Brent Catchpole.
The comments come after news that the northern section of the corridor of the Mill Road corridor project is included in a $28 billion transport funding package announced by Auckland Mayor Phil Goff and the Ministry of Transport.
“I am delighted with the announcement, as many of our roads are at already gridlocked, such as Great South Road, in peak travel times," he says.
“This is a crucial piece of transport infrastructure to support the rapidly growing southern communities and improve the efficiency of the overall southern road network.”
The local board has long advocated for the Mill Road project as being vital for their rapidly growing community and Mr Catchpole hopes the next stage will also be progressed in the future.
“The northern section of stage one is important but I also hope stage two is progressed as soon as possible to realise the benefits of the entire route prior to the major housing and population growth in the southern greenfield developments already underway.”
About the Mill Road Corridor project
The proposed Mill Road corridor project would provide an additional strategic north-south corridor for southern Auckland, connecting Manukau and Drury to the east of the Southern Motorway.
It connects future residential development in the south with employment in the north, particularly around Manukau. Once complete, it will also improve access to new employment opportunities in Drury South.
Phase one takes in the northern section from State Highway 1 at Manukau to the intersection of Mill Road and Popes Road while stage two runs from Mill Road/Popes Road intersection to Papakura and Drury.
