Tennis and netball courts and a perimeter path should be completed by mid-June at Helensville’s Rautawhiri Park.
The $2.3 million upgrade includes new surfaces for all eight courts, better drainage, new nets, hoops, fences and lights, and a practice wall.
The 2km perimeter path is being built in stages, the first costing about $375,000. Once complete it will link the park’s facilities and provide a walking and exercising circuit.
The Lions Club of Helensville is donating five fitness stations for the path. Fitness Trail project manager Scott Osmond says fundraising and a grant from the Lloyd Morgan Lions Clubs Charitable Trust are making the donation possible.
“We hope people enjoy the equipment and get fit and healthy. Families will be able to work out together on equipment designed for all ages, abilities and fitness levels.”
The park’s facilities have been developed over 20 years and include a community building, tennis and netball courts, football fields, a children’s playground and extensive walkable parkland.
Rodney Local Board Parks and Recreation Committee Chair Brent Bailey says the multi-million dollar project has received funding from development contributions.
“It’s wonderful to see that money being re-invested in local communities. This park is a fantastic asset that people will enjoy for years to come.”
