Key roading projects announced by Auckland Transport last year for the Albany Ward are now in progress.

A footbridge for walking and cycling, connected to the existing one-way vehicular bridge, has just been completed on Gills Road. Construction of connecting footpaths is now underway.

Albany Ward Councillor John Watson says, “The focus, at this end of Gills Road, is on providing better infrastructure to enable residents to walk and cycle safely between their homes and the old Albany village area.”

Fellow Albany Councillor Wayne Walker says, “As councillors, we, along with the Upper Harbour Local Board, are focused on improving roading connections and enhancing safety for all road users, including cyclists and pedestrians.”

Plans for a new road connection to Oteha Valley Road from the Appian Way and Gills Road intersection will soon be developed.

“The link road is necessary to boost capacity and safety for the increased traffic expected as a result of housing development in the area,” Upper Harbour Local Board Chair Lisa Whyte.

“Auckland Transport will soon share plans for a link road, and aims to lodge the resource consent this month, with construction likely to start in early 2019.” Plans for a new link road between Medallion Drive and Fairview Avenue are also underway and work is expected to start in 2019.

Auckland Transport is also undertaking investigation work to widen Dairy Flat Highway between Stevenson Crescent and Gills Road. Councillors and local boards are urging residents to have their say on the future of transport in Auckland.

“We want to hear from residents on key local projects and improvements, including the much-needed safety enhancements on Glenvar Road in Torbay,” says Hibiscus and Bays Local Board Chair Julia Parfitt.
