A multi-sports pavilion at Millwater’s Metro Park has taken a step forward.
Hibiscus and Bays Local Board has granted $108,322 to the Metro Park Charitable Trust to develop design-build plans for a pavilion tipped to cost between $900,000 and $1.4 million.
Close to the existing car park, it will be used by athletics, cricket, football and rugby clubs that use the nearby fields, and board chair Julia Parfitt says although small, it will be fit-for-purpose and future-proofed.
“The park’s size and shape dictate what can be built. Investigations have shown one building won’t meet the needs of all the sports and activities that will one day take place at the park.
“It makes sense to start with a small pavilion that clubs can share, and that can be added to as the population grows and funding allows.
“This grant will assist the trust with their efforts to secure the rest of the funds needed for the plans.
“In time, a larger building at the park’s southern end will be developed that will cater for more clubs and also deliver indoor sports.”
The trust will raise another $50,000 for the plans, expected to be completed in the 2018-19 financial year.
