Auckland Transport is adding smart studs to Quay Street to tell drivers when bike riders are approaching the Queen's Wharf section of the separated cycleway.
The smart studs, which will be installed on the road surface approaching Queen's Wharf, will light up when a bike rider is near this busy entrance and help to provide better warning for drivers to give way to people riding in the cycleway.
AT's Manager for Walking, Cycling and Road Safety Kathryn King says the studs will help drivers turning from Quay Street into Queen's Wharf be aware of people on bikes.
"The Quay Street Cycleway is one of Auckland's busiest, and a lot of people drive over the cycleway to get into Queen's Wharf," she says.
"We want to make it even safer for bike riders and the smart studs will create a better warning system for drivers and tell them when people on bikes will be on the cycleway when they're looking to turn."
"Sensors will be installed on the cycleway that will turn the lights on when a bike rider is approaching, giving people driving in and out of Queen's Wharf greater warning and time to slow down and give way to people riding."
The smart studs will be installed over several nights this week to minimise disruption, weather dependent.
