Recently, Auckland’s councillors participated in a voluntary activity to show their support to local organisations for National Volunteer Week, which runs from 17 to 23 June.
Albert-Eden-Roskill Councillor Cathy Casey spent a day at the New Zealand Bird Rescue Charitable Trust.
The trust looks after thousands of birds each year that may be victims of road accidents, pollution or cat attacks. Staff and volunteers raise many orphans and rehabilitate sick and injured birds, some requiring no more than a few hours of care while others require many months.
“A couple of years ago I rescued a pūkeko from a drain and took it to the bird rescue centre at Green Bay. I was warmed by the care and expertise they showed with this injured bird.
"I am delighted to have had the chance to learn more about this fantastic volunteer-based organisation first-hand," says Cr Cathy Casey.
National Volunteer Week celebrates the importance of volunteering in New Zealand and the goodwill of those who give their time to volunteer.
