Special Olympics provides a year-round sports training and competition programme in a variety of international sports for children and adults who have an intellectual impairment.
Albert-Eden-Roskill Ward Councillor Christine Fletcher has been a long-time supporter and Patron of Special Olympics Auckland. As a part of National Volunteer Week 2018 in June, she volunteered her time to show her support for the work of the organization.
“I saw more than just the physical benefits of sport, participating in the Football Games Day. It was a day of fun, friendships, and team spirit that gave the athletes a feeling of belonging that will ultimately improve their quality of life,” says Councillor Fletcher.
“The athletes embodied the Special Olympics motto ‘Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.’”
Special Olympics is a global movement that supports more than 4.9 million athletes in 172 countries. Over a million volunteers contribute their time and talents.
