Franklin Local Board is helping make local children safe, it's got together with Auckland Transport (AT) to buy child restraints for families in the Franklin area.
The board has given $5000 from its Community Response Fund to support AT, Plunket and the Police in their efforts to improve the safety of children.
Board chair Angela Fulljames says the board is pleased to be able to support parents and their young children. "Establishing good, safe travel habits at an early age is important for the future of our community."
Reducing the risk of injury or death in a crash
AT Group Manager Safety, Randhir Karma says a correctly-fitted child restraint, which is the right size, will reduce the risk of injury or death in a crash.
"At a checkpoint in Pukekohe recently more than 70 per cent of child restraints were not fitted properly, that isn't good enough.
"The grant from the local board will mean we can buy 54 full car seats and booster seats for at-risk families and we will show them how to install the seats correctly."
AT child restraint technicians carry out more than 60 checkpoints and 10 clinics a year, often the restraint isn't right for the child's age, height and weight, or isn't fitted correctly.
