Auckland Council’s Planning Committee has approved the allocation of $82,000 in funding from the 2017/2018 Regional Historic Heritage Grants Programme.
Councillor Chris Darby, who chairs the committee, says 25 applications were received and eight were approved, ranging in value from $4,000 to $20,000 with an average grant of $10,250.
“The Regional Historic Heritage Grants programme encourages Aucklanders to be more involved in the care of regionally significant heritage sites and places, including with conservation, preservation, and repair work and supporting kaitiakitanga of Māori cultural heritage.
“The eight successful projects include some of Auckland’s iconic historic heritage buildings that require conservation and repair work to keep the link to our unique and valuable history alive and well for the benefit of all Aucklanders”, he says.
About the projects:
- Christ Church, Ellerslie ($20,000): to restore and maintain the stained glass windows which are of significant heritage value and towards the Church Preservation Fund. The church is scheduled as a Category A historic heritage place.
- The former Onehunga Post Office ($10,000): towards completion of a structural upgrade of the building essential for its long-term survival. The building is a Category A historic heritage place.
- Minniesdale House, Rodney ($15,000): for the replacement of the roof on this Category B historic place.
- The former John Courts Department Store Building, Queen Street ($6,800): commonly known as the Whitcoulls building, the funding goes towards the repair and re-installation of the clock on this Category B historic heritage building.
- Espano Flats, Newton ($10,600): funding towards the conservation plan for Espano Flats that will guide ongoing conservation work for this Category B historic heritage place.
- Selwyn Anglican Church, Mangere ($4,000): towards revising the existing conservation plan for the church which is a Category A historic heritage place.
- 19 King Edward St, Mt Eden ($5,600): for mortar reinstatement and repair of mortar joints made of handmade limestone blocks on this 1906 historic villa within a heritage zone one street.
- William Granger's Brick House, Whitford ($10,000): to replace the entire roof for the heritage dwelling and disposal of existing roofing material for this Category A historic heritage place.
