Three more surf life-saving facilities in Auckland are getting an upgrade thanks to funding from Auckland Council and other organisations.
The three facilities, at North Piha, Kariotahi and Orewa, have been included for funding through the Surf Life Saving Northern Region Surf 10:20 Programme.
The works will assist in delivering crucial life-saving work and increase public safety at these sites.
“Auckland Council has continued to support Surf Life Saving Northern Region ensuring Auckland and its visitors are afforded safe access to our treasured beaches. We really value this support,” says Surf Life Saving Northern Region CEO Matt Williams.
The $3.7 million funding was allocated in council’s recently passed 10-year Budget. Waitākere Ward Councillor Linda Cooper was a strong advocate for the funding.
“I’m so glad we’ve been able to support the outstanding work of Surf Life Saving Northern Region,” says Cr Cooper.
“Not only do they save lives, each year they provide beach education to many school children at these facilities.”
“We’re lucky to be able to enjoy fantastic beaches in Auckland. But many of the surf life-saving facilities at these beaches were built in the 1950s and 1960s, and now need urgent upgrades to meet the demands of increased beach patronage because of our growing population. This funding will help keep these people a bit safer.”
