If you're a confident swimmer with effective communication skills and an interest in community wellbeing, then this is the role for you and could be just the thing to open the door to your career in the sports and leisure industry.

Birkenhead Pool and Leisure Centre Aquatics Team Leader James Lawrie started his career at Auckland Council Pools and Leisure as a summer lifeguard.
“I started as a swim teacher and summer lifeguard in 2015/16 at West Wave. I applied for the position as I liked how much variety there was, and it gave me an opportunity to use my customer service and sales background.”
James says working as a summer lifeguard is a suitable job for anyone, no matter your age.
“It’s seen as a young person’s job, but I worked with 17-year-olds through to 40+ year-olds. Everyone would swap work stories of rescues and there was a real team feel. It made for a very relaxed working environment, which helps especially over summer when it can get hectic.
“There is a certain level of swimming ability you need to start with, but all the rescue work and techniques are taught and practised on the job.”
James recommends the role to anyone thinking of a career in sport and recreation.
“Lifeguarding is a great starting point for someone looking to work in the sport and recreation industry. I’ve seen people start as lifeguards and end up as gym instructors and fitness trainers, there’s a lot of learning opportunities.
“I worked my way up and now I’m running a pool and swim school and have my own team in an awesome recreation centre.
“Every day is a different challenge. I could be doing rosters and admin one day and be on the water kayaking with kids the next.”
