Working with the community to investigate and reduce ongoing flooding issues in parts of the Howick ward continues to be a key focus for Councillor Sharon Stewart.
In a follow-up to last month’s meeting where affected residents raised their concerns, Councillor Stewart is planning more meetings to help council staff get a better understanding of the problems in specific areas.
“It is much more beneficial for residents being able to talk about the issues in their particular area so we need to do that on a catchment by catchment basis.
“It’s clear in some cases the frequency and intensity of the downpours are contributing to some of the problems but we need to understand what else might be going on and the council’s Healthy Waters team are looking into this.”
She is grateful for the efforts from council staff on this issue.
“I can’t speak highly enough about how responsive they have been to working with the community to get to the bottom of this and look for solutions – I know it is very much appreciated.”
“We will also have staff from other areas of the council at our next meeting, including Auckland Transport. We realise these issues are complicated and want to make sure we address every aspect.”
But she cautions that the community will need to be realistic and patient.
“There are some immediate things to reduce the risk or severity of flooding but if any larger infrastructure changes are needed, this will take time to implement.”
The next meeting is on 16 August. If you haven’t already registered your interest please email Tamsyn Matchett or phone 09 365 3466.
