An upgrade to Deep Creek Reserve sports field in Torbay is set to kick off in September.
The $1.2 million upgrade was delayed for a year as it is dependent on sports field usage. Consent delays have also had an impact.
Hibiscus and Bays Local Board deputy chair Janet Fitzgerald says the upgrade, timed around the football season, will allow year-round play.
“There is a huge demand on fields in East Coast Bays and this upgrade will add an extra 12 hours playing time a week.”
New drainage, lighting and facilities will increase training capacity, especially for junior grades during winter.
The plans include a three-quarter-size sand carpet football training pitch, a sealed car park with an accessible public toilet, more seating, trees and plants, and road frontage bollards.
Community consultation led to adjustments to several floodlights. During construction and the grass grow-in period, the upper reserve will be closed.
People will have access to the lower reserve but are asked to follow the signs because there may be some disruption.
