The next stage of the Ian McKinnon Drive Cycleway is now in construction as Auckland Transport builds the separated cycleway from Piwakawaka Street to Upper Queen Street.
Work includes reducing the number of lanes on Ian McKinnon Drive, between Upper Queen Street and Piwakawaka Street, (toward Dominion Road) from two to one. This allows us to build a two-way, separated cycleway to increase safety for people on bikes and pedestrians.
We will also improve the intersection and crossings at Canada Street and Upper Queen Street to make it easier to get onto the Grafton Gully Cycleway from Te Ara I Whiti – the Lightpath.

Visit at.govt.nz for updates. There will be traffic management in place along Ian McKinnon Drive and the shared paths on Upper Queen Street as works progress. We expect construction to take eight weeks.
The Ian McKinnon Drive Cycleway connects the North Western Cycleway with Upper Queen Street, separating people on bikes from pedestrians and vehicles.
It removes a steep hill climb alongside the Newton Road onramp, and takes bike riders through Suffolk Reserve from Takau Street, under the Newton Road overbridge, to Ian McKinnon Drive.
