Experienced Auckland-based civil works contractor HEB Construction has been awarded the Kennedy Point wharf upgrade contract.
The contract tendering process saw a number of responses, and Waiheke Local Board chair Cath Handley says it was encouraging that the project attracted several high-quality submissions.
“The evaluation panel reviewed six submissions in total, all from top-tier contractors with significant expertise," she says.
“Our chosen contractor, HEB, has an impressive history of similar work in equally challenging, ecologically sensitive and culturally-significant locations.”
The Auckland Transport project has already undergone follow-up due diligence and a spokesperson said the organisation was confident HEB had the skills, capability and capacity to complete the required works within budget.
A key part of each tender was the ability to provide a method for the work that minimises the impacts on the terminal and environment.
Ms Handley says she has asked Auckland Transport’s chief executive to review plans to see if a vehicle tyre soak channel can be included in the project to help protect the area from kauri dieback disease.
Considering both the operational impacts and AT funding, the decision has been taken to split the three sections of work into more manageable units.
The first unit, extending and widening the existing ramp, will be completed by December. The second unit, the main wharf reconstruction, has been scheduled between March to Dec next year, and the third, road reconstruction and street lighting, is due in March 2020.
"Splitting the works will mean peak season impacts can be avoided while work is able to progress as quickly as possible," she says.
