Committed local volunteer-run organisations are working tirelessly to restore urban streams in Albert-Eden
Oakley Creek/Te Auaunga and the Meola Creek/Waitītīko flow from Hillsborough through Mt Roskill, Owairaka and Waterview, and from Mt Albert through Western Springs, respectively, to the Waitematā Harbour. With abundant native and exotic flora and fauna, these streams are an important part of the regions’ ecology.
Local volunteers contribute to the awa and surrounding environment by developing planting plans and planting lists, identifying suitable sites for planting, planting trees, and keeping weeds and pests under control.
Conservation Volunteers New Zealand (CVNZ) and Friends of Oakley Creek focus on Oakley Creek/Te Auaunga. The St Lukes Environmental Protection Society work around the Meola Creek and have recently planted 400 trees at Roy Clements Treeway.
Volunteer groups are hard at work on our maunga/ancestral mountains and in our local parks too, including Friends of Maungawhau, CVNZ, Rasheed Memorial Trust, Te Mahurehure Marae, Bluegreens Community Group and Owairaka Ratbaggers.
The Albert-Eden, Whau and Puketāpapa local boards have developed strategies for the parts of Oakley Creek/Te Auaunga they have responsibility for.
In 2018/2019, Albert-Eden Local Board is working with the Waitematā and Puketapapa local boards to develop a catchment plan for Meola Creek/ Waitītīko and Motions Creek/ Waiateao.
