Auckland Council is reminding sheep owners to take extra care of their stock during lambing season.
The council’s Manager Animal Management, Sarah Anderson, says that, when lambing, sheep are likely to stand their ground and be more vocal, which may attract dogs.
“Dog owners should be especially vigilant during lambing season, as the cries of new-born lambs may act on dogs’ predatory instincts,” she says.
“Dogs need to be kept under control and properly confined at all times, especially in rural areas, and if they are not familiar with stock, we’d recommend keeping them on a leash while they're being exercised. If possible, keep them indoors at night.”
Stock owners, or anyone concerned, should call the council on 09 301 0101 and report all roaming dogs.
“Providing a detailed description or a photo of a dog is helpful to us when trying to locate and identify it,” Sarah says.
