Splash pads are a great way for younger kids to have fun in the water and stay safe at the same time. They’re also a great way to get active with your whānau.
Perfect for an inner-city cooldown, check out the splash pad in Myers Park, just next to the playground.
The splash pad was part of Waitematā Local Board’s ‘Myers Park Development Plan’ which revitalised the 100-year-old park.
Constructed in 2016 on the site of the original Myers Park paddling pool, the splash pad design preserves the original heritage features and concrete of the paddling pool.
Featured in the design is an inscribed poem by Hone Tuwhare about Horotiu, the taniwha who lived in the old Waihorotiu Stream, which had its source in the Myers Park gully.
Waitematā Local Board Deputy Chair and parks portfolio lead Shale Chambers says the splash pad was also included in an accessibility audit carried out by the board to ensure that people with limited mobility can enjoy the space too.
So this summer, make sure you head down and check out this free water attraction with lots of history. Take sunscreen, swimwear and towels for plenty of fun in the sun with the kids.
