After concerns raised by members of the community, Māngere-Ōtāhuhu Local Board has approved the extension of the 24-hour, seven-days-a-week alcohol ban at Māngere Bridge Town Centre and Kiwi Esplanade.
The alcohol ban extension includes Coronation Road north of Waterfront Road Reserve, Māngere Bridge boat ramp (wharf) and the boardwalk. The review also looked to include parts of Kiwi Esplanade Reserve, Kiwi Esplanade Road Reserve, Waterfront Road Reserve carpark and the public toilet block that were left out from the existing ban.
The latest alcohol ban map can be accessed here for a clear understanding of the ban locations.
“It corrects an anomaly which in effect saw drinking allowed in an area surrounded by an existing ban,” says Māngere-Ōtāhuhu Local Board Chair Lemauga Lydia Sosene.
“For us, community safety is a priority and to ensure our communities feel safer, this extension has been adopted. It will now cover the whole of Māngere Bridge area, meaning a lesser number of alcohol-related crimes.”
The ban excludes the Old Māngere Bridge which has been formally closed as of 25 November 2018 for demolition. Work on a replacement bridge is scheduled to start in early 2019 and the completion is expected to take more than two years.
Māngere-Ōtāhuhu Local Board has been a strong advocate and supporter of initiatives to reduce the impacts of alcohol-related harm in its community. Some of its work has included funding and facilitating help for the community to opposing some liquor licensing applications. It has also been a strong advocate of better lighting in the area.
The local board is working with Auckland Council and Police to make sure clear signage is installed and maintained, the area is monitored regularly and any alcohol-related disorder is dealt with in a timely manner.
