Ports of Auckland Round the Bays is just round the corner, so it’s time to sign up and kick that training into gear.
Now in its 47th year, the iconic and beautiful 8.4km waterfront walk/run is set to be bigger and better than ever. Starting at the heart of the city in Quay Street, the course follows the shoreline of Auckland’s Waitematā Harbour, finishing at St Heliers Bay.
Auckland Council Leisure Fitness Lead Ritua Ali’iva’a says exercising with a mate or as part of a group is a great way to train for an event like Round the Bays.
“Training together helps with your commitment, motivation and resilience. You’ll also have more fun, which ultimately helps you to achieve better results,” she says.
So go on: grab a mate or two and look forward to these benefits of training together.
1. Increased commitment and motivation
We all struggle with the motivation to pound the pavement but having training buddies will help you avoid the incessant debate in your head about whether or not you should go and work out. It increases your accountability, boosting your commitment and confidence.
2. Work harder
There’s nothing like a bit of friendly competition to get you to work harder and walk/run that little bit more.
3. Support and togetherness
Training with a friend or as part of a group makes exercising a social occasion where you can laugh, be encouraged and motivated, and have a more enjoyable time than toughing it out alone. It also makes celebrating your progress that much better when it’s shared with others.
4. Time flies when you’re having fun
With someone to chat to, you’ll find your run/walk will be over before you know it – leaving you looking forward to the next one!
