Auckland Council’s Community Development and Safety Committee approved Regional Community Development Grants totalling $295,000 to 14 community organisations at its February meeting.
Councillor Cathy Casey, chair of the committee, says the grants help community groups to deliver a tolerant, more inclusive Auckland
“We believe this funding will not only help successful applicants deliver projects that help build social inclusion, equity and thriving communities, but will also help organisations increase their own capacity and capabilities and those of their diverse communities.”
Rochana Sheward, Chief Executive of Belong Aotearoa, is thrilled to receive funding from the Community Development Grant again and says that previous funding was instrumental in helping the WISE (women, inspired, strong and enterprising) women’s collective develop their social enterprise project.
“Supporting women from a refugee background, the WISE project helps participants develop the necessary knowledge, skills, confidence and resources to start-up or contribute to activities to generate income for their families.
“The funding we have received from the council has made a positive difference in the lives of the women who participate,” says Ms Sheward.
“By increasing their participation in society, our participants feel less isolated and more empowered to seek opportunities in education, enterprise and employment. The Community Development Funding really helps us work towards our goals of improving a sense of belonging in Auckland. Thanks Auckland Council!”
