The Waterview Tunnel is a key piece of the Western Ring Route, connecting west Auckland with Manukau, the city and north. This 2.4km tunnel took just over six years to complete and was opened in July 2017.

Albert Eden and Whau local boards are holding a community event to celebrate the end to disruptions from the works to their neighbourhoods. On Saturday 23 February 2019, a one-off event, the Kūkūwai Karnival, is being held at Kūkūwai Park in Owairaka.

“We felt it was important to give something back - our local communities put up with a fair bit of disruption to their everyday lives when the tunnel was being constructed," says Margi Watson, member of Albert-Eden Local Board.

Kūkūwai Park is one of the newest parks in Auckland and is located close to the southern entrance to the Waterview Tunnel.

“Kūkūwai Park is the perfect location for this community event as it is located right in the heart of where the works took place and it is near the border with Whau Local Board area, who we are partnering with for this event.”

Kūkūwai Karnival is a free, family-friendly community event. Bring a picnic or make the most of the local food trucks that will be there.
