Across the region, groups are getting together to find ways to support Seaweek 2019.
Among events being organised in Maungakiekie-Tāmaki area is a group effort by Hirepool, Fishing & Adventure TV and Sustainable Coastlines to clean up the Onehunga Foreshore on the Manukau Harbour.
“This is a family-friendly event. Not only do we want able hands to help do the work, but it would be great to see some younger folks along to learn more about the threats to the health of our coastlines," says Fletcher Sunde speaking on behalf of Sustainable Coastlines.
“I can’t think of a better way to get behind Seaweek," says Debbie Burrows, Deputy Chair of Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local board
"Though it is sad that we even need to tidy up the coastline in our backyard, it will be great to see everyone digging in to help improve it."
Scott and Mig from Fishing and Adventure TV will be there on the day to take part and have some good fishing chat.
The Puketāpapa Local Board area shares the coastline around the Manukau Harbour with neighbouring local boards, with Taumanu Reserve shared between the Puketāpapa and Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Boards. Puketāpapa locals are being asked to support Seaweek at the Taumanu Reserve by joining the beach clean-up on March 9.
“Puketāpapa locals care about the Manukau and I am sure they will turn out again to do their bit during the clean-up,” says Harry Doig, Chair of Puketāpapa Local Board.
About the Onehunga Clean-Up
The event kicks off at 9am, Saturday 9 March at Taumanu Reserve, Seacliff Road, Onehunga.
You will be provided with reusable rubbish sacks and gloves, drinking water, sunblock, sanitiser, health and safety briefing, skilled staff on hand and plenty of guidance.
At about midday, everyone will be invited to enjoy a BBQ sponsored by Hirepool and Phoenic Organic drinks.
What to bring:
- Closed-toe sturdy shoes, such as sneakers, sports shoes or tramping boots are required for participation. Gumboots are not allowed
- Warm and waterproof clothes
- Sun hat and other sunsmart gear
- Sunglasses
- Reusable water bottle (filled-up and ready to go).
