Avondale is in line for another boost following the approval of $1.9 million in funding to improve the footpath on Great North Road in Avondale Town Centre.

Whau Local Board agreed to the funding that will allow the upgrade of around 3,500m² of paving on Great North Road, which in recent times has seen increased incidents of people slipping over.

The funding will also be used to improve the street furniture and other amenities in that location, pending an assessment.

Much needed

It follows the recent announcement that a new $21million new Library and community centre will be built in Avondale, and Whau Local Board Chair Tracy Mulholland says that the funding was much needed.

“This is an exciting time for Avondale. Following on from the announcement about the new community facility that is to be built, the board is delighted that it has been able to help enhance the streetscape in the town centre.

“One of the most important things for us was safety, and we were receiving more and more information that people had been slipping on the paving there,” she says.

Upgrading

“Upgrading the paving will be very welcome and help the many people who use the footpath in this busy area stay safe, even in slippery conditions.

“And we are also aware that the area needs more work and better amenities, such as places to sit and relax, so we were really pleased to be able to allocate this money to such a much-needed space.

“For the passionate, fabulous Avondale community this news will be more than welcome, and the board is delighted to be able to help.”
