Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board has welcomed the decision to keep the bus lane on Manukau Station Road in place after a successful trial.
The bus lane trial started in late January this year on eastbound routes between Davies Avenue and Leyton Way on Manukau Station Road. A report released by Auckland Transport says that at the same time, the speed limit along this section was also temporarily lowered to 50km/hr.
“The trial was successful with no adverse impact on the motorway off-ramp and on that basis, the bus lane will remain in place and will operate between the hours 7am to 10am, and 4pm to 7pm, Monday to Friday,” the report said.
Board chair Lotu Fuli is pleased with the decision and says that the locals have been quick to adapt it during the trial period.
“The bus lane has worked quite well for the locals. The local board has always supported solutions that get people moving on the road.
“As the number of people using public transport every day continues to grow, it’s important to adopt the changes that help ease the traffic around us."
AT is now looking for green surfacing of the lanes and other minor modifications to ensure the bus lane is easily identifiable to motorists.
This bus lane is part of a wider corridor upgrade programme, that will combine bus-priority, pedestrian and cycling improvements. Community consultation on this will get underway later this year.
