Kaipātiki residents are being encouraged to have their say on a new draft masterplan for Birkenhead War Memorial Park.
Birkenhead War Memorial Park is home to numerous sport, leisure and recreational activities and facilities on the North Shore, including the Birkenhead Pool and Leisure Centre, BMX pump track, skate park and the Birkenhead Cricket Club.
To meet the changing needs of the surrounding community, Kaipātiki Local Board has developed a long-term ‘regenerative’ masterplan to look at the park with fresh eyes and think about how the space could be better used in the future.
“The final masterplan will provide a 30-year blueprint for the park, showing how different types of activities can be accommodated, with an emphasis on providing a greater range of reasons to visit it,” says local board chair John Gillon.
“We’ve developed a draft masterplan with the help of current park users and groups, surrounding schools and mana whenua. Now it’s time for our residents to weigh in with their views on it and the proposed changes within it.”
The draft masterplan includes provision of a new multisports facility in the space once occupied by the recently removed grandstand.
“As soon as we have the final masterplan in place, we’ll be able to get moving on the business case for a new multisport facility. We need the business case completed so design and consenting work can get underway, which needs to happen before build and delivery can take place,” says Gillon.
In June last year, North Shore councillors Richard Hills and Chris Darby were successful in gaining support from other Governing Body members to approve $14 million in additional funding, on top of an approved $8 million budget allocation to support the local board's initiative Birkenhead War Memorial Park.
