Capital works projects are currently underway at MOTAT as part of the museum’s long-term site development plans.
The major event on MOTAT’s current capital works calendar is the redevelopment of the Aviation Display at the museum's M2 Meola Rd site. This requires the temporary closure of the entire M2 Aviation Display Hall until the first week of April.
A highlight of the redevelopment will be bringing MOTAT’s Solent Flying Boat inside, the last remaining example of its kind. This iconic aircraft with its bulbous whale-like body and improbable aerodynamic proportions will be on display in position next to its equally mammoth cousin the Sunderland flying boat.
Another highlight will also be the arrival of a J47 2A Ranger Bell Helicopter, MOTAT’s latest acquisition to its aviation collection.
Discounted tickets during renovations
While this exciting work is taking place behind closed doors, MOTAT will be offering 50% off normal general admission tickets to thank the public for their support and patience.
The museum's Great North Rd site will remain open with plenty to see and experience during this period.
Visitors can also continue to park at the M2 Meola Rd site and hop on one of MOTAT's vintage trams which will continue to run throughout the day between M2, the Zoo and M1 on Great North Rd.
Renovation of the main thoroughfare at M1 our Great North Rd site is also currently underway. This project will see this area transformed into a beautifully landscaped play area and meeting space for the enjoyment of everyone at MOTAT and all public visitors.
The entire project will take around two months and will feature innovative ground cover created out of recycled NIKE shoes and a host of other transport themed interactive elements to help satisfy hungry imaginative minds.
