Water quality at the Pt England Bay Reserve has vastly improved over the past year, due partly to work on a shared pathway along the Tāmaki Estuary.
Previous investment by Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board on plantings and community programmes highlighting the river has also played a part.
“Neighbourhood residents and community groups have had a lot to do with the water quality improvements,” say Chris Makaore, Chair of Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board.
“When works were underway on the path, community members approached us requesting additional efforts be made that would improve water quality along the estuary.” In response, the local board allocated funding to increase water filtration and drainage design to help the area better cope with high tides and rain.
“There is still a great deal of work to be done to improve water quality in Tāmaki,” says Chris. “With so much development happening in the area, we all need to be mindful of what is getting in our waterways.”
Water testing results at Pt England beach have been consistently clean since the work was completed.
