A new lodge has been opened on Motu Kaikoura, a scenic reserve just off the coast of Great Barrier.
The island is run by volunteers and has its own wharf, floating pontoon and several kilometres of road.
It now also has an award-winning lodge. About 150 people attended the opening celebrations in March, including iwi from both Auckland and Great Barrier.
The prefabricated building was transported by barge to Great Barrier, helicoptered to the site and assembled there.
The lodge was designed and built by Strachan Group Architects, Architect+Women and Crate Innovation Building.
Funding came from insurance and donations with Great Barrier Local Board providing funding for future solar panels to power the lodge.
Chairperson Rod Miller said the lodge would be frequented by Auckland Council researchers, school groups, outdoor pursuit camp groups and others.
The island provides a conservation sanctuary for native flora and birdlife, including the endangered brown teal and the north island kaka.
Local board chair Izzy Fordham said the lodge would be of tremendous help to those undertaking conservation efforts there. "I'm delighted to see them up and running again with a new lodge."
