Most of the Auckland Council staff in the council’s offices on The Strand in Takapuna will be moving out of the leased building in mid-April.

However, there will be no change in the delivery of services for customers or any change in location for the Customer Service Centre or the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board office. Both will remain at 1 The Strand for the time being.

Auckland Council Head of Corporate Property Rod Aitken says this is the next stage in delivering the council-wide Corporate Property strategy which moves the way the council operates to a ‘hub and spoke’ model.

“We have a planned approach to rationalising the amount of office space the council occupies across the region, consolidating our office space and making sure our staff are in the best places for our customers.

“We will continue to work on future options for the service centre and local board office – both will remain on the ground floor of the current building for now,” he says.

This move is happening somewhat earlier than initially planned. The landlord has presented opportunities to council to vacate the rented space earlier – which also offers cost savings.

“Giving up the majority of our leased space in the building provides significant opportunities for savings for the council.

“Staff moving from Takapuna have options to work in the CBD, and at Orewa, Henderson, Westgate and Helensville,” he says.

A feature of the hub and spoke model includes creating workpoints at existing council buildings (spokes) like libraries and council facilities, that staff can book if they want to work closer to their customers or closer to home.
