The Howick area is the first to contribute to Auckland Council’s proposed Age-friendly Auckland Action Plan.
The council and partners are developing the region-wide cross-sector plan to improve outcomes for older Aucklanders through a series of community meetings across the region.
Auckland’s older population – those aged over 65 years – is growing faster than any other age group.
The council and partners want older people to feel they belong and can contribute and participate in their community.
“We want to hear from older Aucklanders and the wider community on the needs, opportunities and aspirations of our older people and those approaching that age group,” said Councillor Penny Hulse, Chair of the Environment and Community Committee.
“The growing ageing population is a global issue. For the first time in history, people 65 and older outnumber children under five.
“Auckland will be home to substantially larger numbers and a greater proportion of ethnically and culturally diverse people over the next few decades. This will create greater and more complex demand for services and infrastructure to meet their needs,” she added.

The issue for discussion at the Howick meeting is Respect and Social Inclusion and the meeting will be held on Monday 6 May, from 10.15am to 12.30pm at the Nixon Park Community Hall, 70 Sale Street, Howick.
