Eden Terrace's Basque Park is rising in popularity as a growing number of apartment dwellers seek a green refuge close to Auckland's city centre.
The park in its present form was designed by landscape architect Ted Smyth with nīkau palms and a circular stone water feature creating striking visuals.
Waitematā Local Board board member Adriana Christie says pathway improvements are planned for the park over the next financial year and the local board also recognises the need for an off-leash dog area.
“Basque Park is our most loved and utilised green space in Uptown. Eden Terrace and Newton populations are on the rise, with an increase in apartment dwellers, many of whom have pets.”
“This means we need to consider if our local green spaces, like Basque Park, are still fit for purpose and meeting the needs of our communities,” she said.
Auckland Council is seeking Aucklanders' views on proposed changes to dog time and season rules to see more consistency across the region, as well as proposed improvements to dog management in Auckland.
Adriana Christie says this consultation needs to conclude before the local board can make moves towards considering an off-leash dog area at the park.
“Basque Park is our Uptown backyard and it's important that those of us who live locally are able to enjoy it,” she said.
Public consultation on Auckland’s dog rules closes on 10 May.
