Māngere-Ōtāhuhu Local Board recently hosted the visiting United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres at a roundtable discussion held at Māngere Arts Centre.
The 13 May gathering was organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT), Pasifika community organisations and international NGOs in South Auckland.
Also attended by Manukau ward councillor Alf Filipaina, the discussion "Where could we be in 2030?" focussed on Pacific and Māori aspirations and opportunities for development in Auckland and other regions.
The discussion identified 17 sustainable development goals that are a priority framework for the United Nations and the international community, including no poverty, zero hunger, good health and well-being, quality education and reduced inequality.
Local Board Chair Lemauga Lydia Sosene says that it was great to be a part of the discussion around the well-being and sound future of our communities.
“It was our privilege to host His Excellency Mr António Guterres in Māngere and discuss the wider growth of our communities. On behalf of the Māngere-Ōtāhuhu Local Board, I acknowledged our work as a team, within the local council framework engaging our communities.
"While it’s not always easy, we are committed and always strive to align the community’s aspirations with our plans.
"There was a significant contribution provided by the leaders of the round table, which was well-received by His Excellency Mr Guterres. We are extremely pleased with the opportunity to co-host.”
