Several roads in Mt Albert have been upgraded to improve safety for residents.
The new safety features—which have been installed around Carrington Road, St Lukes Road and the railway area—include speed humps and tables, kerb build-outs, and a roundabout.
All entrances from the surrounding arterial roads have also been marked with large, red-painted ‘slow’ thresholds (see photo above).
Reducing traffic speeds
The project aims to reduce traffic speeds and provide safer crossing points for pedestrians. It builds on a similar project in Sandringham that has reduced traffic speeds by 23 per cent.
“Our approach has been to treat the affected area as more than just a collection of streets,” says Albert-Eden Local Board’s transport lead, Graeme Easte.
“It is a residential community, and we are encouraging drivers to dial back their speed and drive through the neighbourhood at a respectful pace.”
The $692,945 project was funded from Albert-Eden Local Board’s 2017/18 Transport Capital Fund through Auckland Transport, and was informed by community surveys conducted by the local board in 2016.
