Papakura being rated as a better area for millennials to live in than hotspots like Parnell, Ponsonby and Mt Eden has come as a surprise to local board chair Brent Catchpole.
Real Estate Institute research rated Ōtāhuhu, Henderson and Papakura as the best spots for millennials - people born between 1980 and 2000.
"The ratings were based on walking distances from amenities and shops, public transport and average house and rental prices,” Mr Catchpole says.
“All of those are givens in Papakura, and there’s every reason to believe we will become increasingly attractive."
He says excellent transport links are making Papakura more attractive.
“All the shops are here, all the big retailers too, there are sporting facilities nowhere else in Auckland can match and housing prices aren’t off the charts.
"Trains make the city a quick and pleasant trip rather than a taxing vehicle commute. All of these things are going to see Papakura change."
Real Estate Institute head Bindi Norwell says Papakura offers excellent facilities at an affordable rate. "You can save money and have a good lifestyle."
While inner city living was attractive to young people, rental costs could be $20,000 higher a year than in areas like Papakura or New Lynn.
"I’m told you can pay serious money for a room in a flat in the city but save hundreds of dollars by moving to Papakura, and we welcome anyone who wants to make the move.
"The days when moving south meant you were sacrificing things are long gone. We have everything people could need, it’s just a sensible move to make."
