Franklin residents are being urged to become crime fighters.
Franklin Local Board chair Angela Fulljames is encouraging residents to help create safer communities by joining Neighbourhood Support groups.
"Crime isn’t something that is everybody else’s responsibility," she says. "We can all play a part, and Neighbourhood Support is a great place to start.
"There are groups across Franklin, but anyone can email franklin.nz.ns@gmail.com or visit the Franklin Neighbourhood Support facebook page for information on how to set up a group in their own area."
Neighbourhood Support groups focus on three areas, crime prevention, reporting and knowing your neighbours.
"We hear the messages about securing our homes and making sure things are locked and alarms set, but how many of us let things slide?” Ms Fulljames says.
Board deputy chair Andy Baker is a former police officer and understands the value of Neighbourhood Support.
"The board is very supportive of the volunteers doing this work because they help create a better, safer place for us all to live.
"If we say nothing it makes it harder for our police, and we know rural communities often don’t report crimes. It’s as simple as ‘see something, say something’ and you can use the new 105 number for reporting non-emergency crimes."
