Puketāpapa Local Board is planning to make streets in its area safer for pedestrians and cyclists.
More than $600,000 will be allocated through a new Community Safety Fund to deliver safety improvements including new pedestrian crossings on Hillsborough Road and road safety measures around schools.
“Safety on our roads – particularly for pedestrians, cyclists, and users of alternative transport modes – is important to the board,” says Puketāpapa Local Board Chair Harry Doig.
“This Auckland Transport initiative will provide much-needed funds to further local road safety projects and will respond to issues raised by locals.”
Auckland Transport is also making walking safer in the area around the Mt Roskill school campus. Locals have been consulted about improvements around Frost Road and Carr Road and progress is being made in the Mt Albert Road / Hayr Road and Dornwell Avenue areas.
And improvements are also planned for May Road to make it safer for pedestrians, with locals consulted recently on additional crossing facilities.
The Community Safety Fund is a result of the 2018 Regional Land Transport Plan, which allocated $20 million for local initiatives in road safety. This includes $5 million in the 2019/2020 financial year and a further $15 million in FY2019/2020. Money is allocated to local areas where it is most needed, based on the number of serious road injuries or fatalities.
