Waiheke Local Board is planning an extensive redevelopment of Tawaipareira Reserve in Ostend Road.
The aim is to create a unique park with something for everyone, focusing on facilities for youth and families, while encouraging active lifestyles within the community.
The proposed Tawaipareira concept plan includes a renewed skate park, double basketball half court, a playground, a renewed learn to ride bike path, an informal dirt BMX track, a circular walking path and a central picnic area.
“The local board is pleased to have put aside sufficient funds for this development”, says local board Chair Cath Handley.
“The new park at Tawaipareira is intended to be a hub for youth and will also be attractive for families and people of all ages. The skate park half-pipe was going to be replaced but we realised the whole park was an opportunity,” she says.
The Tawaipareira project is expected to be delivered in stages, with different park facilities introduced over coming years. The board will be working with Ngati Paoa who co-manage the reserve with Auckland Council.
The first stage will be to renew the existing skatepark to improve the concrete surface and provide additional elements, such as a bowl and quarter pipes, to create flow and different levels of difficulty that cater to those starting out through to the more seasoned skating enthusiasts.
A basketball half-court will increase play facilities, while further developments such as bike tracks, walking paths and an adventure playground will be completed in the following years. Healthy Waters is currently working on the site to resolve drainage issues on the eastern side of the reserve.
The community will have a chance to provide feedback on the project plan from 10am on Saturday 6 July at the Tawaipareira skatepark.
A skate competition organised by local skater Flynn Wilson will be held on the same day.
