Residents of Piha and Karekare are being urged to be prepared should a natural disaster occur.
Auckland Council is developing a reference guide for each area outlining the steps for residents to take prior and during an emergency and wants feedback on the document to make sure it is fit for purpose, accurate and appropriate.
Developed in conjunction with the respective communities, the two reference guides, A Resilient Piha and A Resilient Karekare are now ready for feedback before being made final.
Being prepared
Auckland Council Community Resilience Manager, Melanie Hutton, says that being well connected to neighbours and prepared to help yourself and others without immediately needing to rely on emergency services is essential for all communities but especially those more isolated or more at risk from disasters.
“Climate change is altering the nature of the weather events in the country, with more severe rain and storms causing greater hazard impacts.
“Communities like Piha and Karekare are vulnerable during these events, so there has never been a better time to ensure you and your whānau are prepared if you live in one of these communities.
“As either residents with valuable local knowledge, or visitors who come to enjoy the Piha or Karekare surroundings and its facilities, we are looking for feedback on the draft reference guide.
“Input will help us refine the document and make it useful in helping both residents and visitors be more resilient to disasters.”
Have your say
Consultation on the guides is open now until 26 August 2019.
There is also a community meeting on 4 August from 2-4pm at Barnett Hall, 2 North Piha Road to provide feedback in person.
