Great Barrier Local Board has officially changed its name to Aotea / Great Barrier Local Board.
This change, which came about after Auckland Council’s representation review conducted under the Local Electoral Act 2001, took into account the intended renaming of Great Barrier Island as part of the Treaty settlement with Ngati Rehua Ngatiwai ki Aotea.
This recommendation was upheld by the Local Government Commission and, from the local government elections later this year, the local board will be known as Aotea / Great Barrier Local Board.
The name of the island has not yet changed but will eventually do so when the Treaty settlement negotiations are finalized.
Representations reviews
Representation reviews are conducted under the Local Electoral Act 2001. A review can change:
- Number of governing body wards, their names and number of members in each
- Number of local board subdivisions in a local board area, their names and number of members in each
- Names of local boards
- Number of members in each local board
