A long-awaited roading project in Albany has been given the go-ahead, while others gather momentum thanks to funding from Upper Harbour Local Board.
At its meeting this week, Upper Harbour Local Board agreed to support the Gills Road footpath extension project - approving $658,428 from its Community Safety Fund to Auckland Transport (AT) for the project.
To further demonstrate the board’s commitment to the project, it also approved the remaining balance of $39,060 from its Local Board Transport Capital Fund towards the Gills Road project.
The completion of this project is subject to the balance of funds required being approved by the AT Board.
Medallion Drive Link
As part of a package of other projects, AT is also progressing the $33.9 million Medallion Drive Link Road project, and considering the installation of traffic signals at the intersection of Dairy Flat Highway and The Avenue.
Property negotiations have now been concluded allowing work to start shortly on the link road, which will help to relieve congestion and improve safety in the surrounding area.
The Medallion Drive Link will be two lanes, approximately 170 metres long and include a new bridge, footpaths and bike-riding facilities linking Fairview Avenue with Oteha Valley Road. Traffic signals will be put in at Oteha Valley Road and a roundabout installed at the intersection of Fairview Avenue and Medallion Drive Link Road.
It will improve travel times and walking and cycling will be a lot safer for those crossing the very busy Oteha Valley Road, particularly for local school children.
The project will enable AT and Auckland Council to deliver essential infrastructure to support the growth of approximately 4600 households in the Fairview Heights and Albany Heights area.
Completion of the link road is anticipated to be mid-2021.

Dairy Flat Highway/Gills Road Link
AT will also establish a team shortly to bring two other local projects together - Dairy Flat Highway and Gills Road Link. A strategic review will be undertaken to look at their role in the wider transport network.
In the meantime, AT is looking to bring the local board supported Gills Road footpath extension project forward, along with the signalisation at Dairy Flat Highway and The Avenue, subject to AT Board funding approval. Both projects will improve safety for pedestrians, bike riders and drivers.
