Henderson-Massey Local Board has agreed to safety improvements at the intersection of Rathgar Road and Universal Drive in Henderson.
It would mean that the intersection would receive signals and a raised intersection that would aid in making the area safer and record fewer accidents.
Crashes
Between 2014 and 2018, there were 14 reported crashes at the intersection, with the main type of collision resulting from cars turning right out of Rathgar Road. It is hoped that the signals and intersection will prevent these types of incidents from occurring.
It is the final part of the Home and School Zone in Henderson announced earlier this year, which installed traffic calming measures such as traffic islands, crossings and cycling paths to make it safer to walk and cycle to school.
Henderson-Massey Local Board Chair, Shane Henderson, says that improving safety at the intersection was a no-brainer and that it is a process that will ultimately lead to fewer accidents at the location.
Next steps
Auckland Transport will now come up with designs for both parts of the project, which is to be funded in part through the boards Community Safety Fund.
The first part of the project will be the installation of signals that will also provide a crossing at the location which currently does not have one.
The raised table, which will help to reduce the speed of vehicles that do not stop for the red lights, will be installed at the same time should funding allow.
If not, the table will be installed when funding can be allocated.
