Te Pae O Kura, formerly known as Kelston Community Centre, is in line for a comprehensive renewal and potentially improvements to both the external and internal areas that will enable the centre to serve the community for the next 25 years.
Henderson-Massey Local Board agreed to the refurbishment, having considered several options for the centre which is currently in need of significant work to continue operations.
Assessment
An assessment of the 44-year old building revealed that there are significant water tightness issues, with works required to replace joinery and cladding and asbestos roofs.
Internally, an extensive refurbishment is planned which includes an updated kitchen as well as new plumbing and heating. The council will also investigate a potential extension of the exterior decking.
Well used
Shane Henderson, chair of Henderson-Massey Local Board says the decision made sense for the long term as the proposed work would significantly increase the lifespan the well-used community facility.
Temporary work
While future budget is being secured to progress these works, temporary mitigation works are proposed to minimise further water ingress and subsequent damage. This temporary work will begin in August 2019. The building will remain open while the work is done.
At this stage of the project, it is too early to determine the sequence of the work or project timeframes. Auckland Council will work closely with facility users to ensure their needs are met throughout the project.
