Winners of this year’s 2019 annual Birkenhead Photo Competition were revealed at an awards ceremony in Birkenhead last night.
Competition organisers and judges were impressed by the number of entries received from locals sharing what they love about Birkenhead, as well as by the overall quality of the submissions received.
“We are delighted with the high level of interest in the competition this year, it reflects the strength of this community” says Birkenhead Residents Association chairperson Gillian Taylor.
“The interest and involvement of local businesses increased, as did the number of individuals who submitted photos. The 155 photos submitted each represent different aspects of Birkenhead and the things people value about it.”
“The competition is run as a way of engaging our community in a fun and creative way to share images of what our neighbourhood means to us.”
“I’d like to acknowledge the kind support of Barfoot and Thompson, and our other sponsors, as well as our judges, James Frankham, publisher of New Zealand Geographic and local resident, Phil Fogle, photographer and Helen Schamroth of the Kaipātiki Public Arts Trust.”
A number of spot prizes were sponsored by local businesses: OTT Patisserie, Crossfit Birkenhead, Casual Foodie, ASB Bank, Shoredance, Chelsea Sugar, Auto Super Shoppe Birkenhead, Generosity Coffee, Birkenhead Brewing Company.
This year’s competition encouraged entries into the following categories:
- Community (sponsored by Hello Auckland)
- Environment (sponsored by Helloworld Travel)
- Heritage (sponsored by Salmond Reed Architects)
A total of 42 prizes were awarded with winning entries now on display for all to see and enjoy until end of day 29 September at the Birkenhead Library.
