Cyclists from across Auckland are taking over Pukekohe Park raceway for the Counties Cycle Classic on 13 October, the track hosting the start and finish of the races.
Organised by Pukekohe Rotary and supported by Franklin Local Board, the event has become a fixture on the cycling calendar.
“The on-going support of the board and local businesses, and the level of entries, tells us that we’re delivering what the community wants,” organiser Graham Russell says
The event caters for serious riders on a 97km challenge, a 52km intermediate distance, and a 42km course for casual riders.
There is also a special e-bike section, with riders challenged to get as close as they can to a pre-set time, and rides for children around the track.
All money raised goes to charity and youth sports.
The classic is a couple of weeks before the K2 on the Coromandel and about six weeks before Taupo, another Rotary initiative. “It’s a great warm-up opportunity,” Russell says.
The ride is on roads with little traffic and good scenery children can ride the track while the cyclists are on the road.
