On the eve of the 40th anniversary of the Mt Erebus accident, the Government is proposing to build a National Erebus Memorial in Parnell’s Dove-Myer Robinson Park (Parnell Rose Gardens). The memorial will acknowledge the impact the event had on the families involved and the nation.
The Mt Erebus crash remains the worst aviation tragedy in New Zealand’s history. When Air New Zealand flight 901 crashed into Mt Erebus in Antarctica on 28 November 1979, two hundred and fifty-seven people died.

Manatū Taonga, the Ministry for Culture and Heritage is leading the memorial project and asked Auckland Council to provide a shortlist of five potential sites in central Auckland for the memorial.
After reviewing the proposed sites, the Ministry selected Dove-Myer Robinson Park as the preferred location. In November 2018, Waitematā Local Board provided landowner approval in principle.
