A Decorative Bias: Parisian Ties 1919-209 - exhibition
When: Saturday 5 to Monday 28 October

A chance encounter on a train marked the beginning of a 100-year journey in men's fashion.
Callil Abdallah was a man blessed with an entrepreneurial spirit. In search of inspiration for a new venture, he went to America. On a train he struck up a conversation with a tie maker who explained to him how to make a necktie.
Callil drew the tie pattern onto a napkin and tucked it into his pocket where it stayed until he returned to New Zealand.
Back home he made his first tie and his company, Parisian Ties, has been making ties here ever since.

Kinder House: 200th birthday commemoration
When: Saturday 5 to Saturday 12 October, Wednesday to Saturday, 12pm - 3pm
Where: Kinder House, 2 Ayr St, Parnell

The Rev. Dr John Kinder was the first Anglican headmaster in Auckland, and was one of New Zealand's most influential ministers, teachers and artists.
He presented the New Zealand landscape and all its peculiarities through his topographical landscape watercolours and photographs. His body of work gives us a portrait of early colonial New Zealand.

An outdoor journey at Highwic
When: Saturday 5 October, 2pm - 3pm
Where: Highwic, 40 Gillies Ave, Epsom

Visit Highwic for a guided garden tour in the expert hands of one of our volunteer gardeners.
The Buckland family planned the English cottage style gardens to remind them of their Devon heritage.
Several live-in gardeners have cared for them ever since.

Night at Auckland Museum: landlubbers to scurvy dogs
When: Sunday 6, Friday 11 and Sunday 13 October, 6pm - 8.30pm

Ahoy ye families! Join our adventures and suffer a sailor's life on-board, as we navigate the southern oceans with Cook and co.
It will be all hands on deck as you learn how to behave in His Majesty's Royal Navy.
Avoid the dreaded cat o' nine tails and sample some delightful 19th century naval food. Mmmm, pease porridge, anyone?
Discover stories and traditions of tangata whenua as encountered by that first bewildered bunch of seafarers. How do you communicate if you don't speak the same language?
Try to dodge muddles and mix-ups once we reach the Pacific. Have you got what it takes?
Well, let’s batten down the hatches and join in the fun in this overboard quest.

Cornwall Park exhibition: Sir John's journeys

Join us at the Huia Discovery Hub this October to explore the journeys of Sir John Logan Campbell.
Sir John’s journeys are endless. He travelled from Tāmaki Makaurau as a young Scottish settler, and explored Aotearoa and the world.
With journeys come stories, knowledge and the bringing together of cultures, people and places.
This interactive exhibition showcases his passion for travel and his explorative nature.

Birkenhead Village presents: fashion, frocks and fancy dress

The way a society dresses, and the materials and methods used to create clothes is fascinating.
Journey through the decades of displays through four shop windows that show the fashion of the time, and explain its significance.
Live music will also be playing on selected days.
