Manurewa has honoured its community volunteers at an awards ceremony.
More than 80 nominations were received for the Manurewa Community Volunteer awards across five categories, including group/organisation making a difference, local hero, member of an organisation, pride in our environment and young person making a difference.
Recipients, including community groups and organisations and individuals, were joined by their friends and whānau at a special event at the Manurewa Sports Centre.
The annual awards are organised by Manurewa Local Board as a way to recognise the selfless contribution of the people and groups in the work they do for their community.
A special Volunteer of the Year award was given to Jim Watkins for more than 60 years of voluntary services in the Manurewa Local Board area. Jim, a life member of Manurewa Township Society Inc. since 1993, has been an avid supporter of the town centre.
Manurewa Local Board deputy chair and outgoing local board member Stella Cattle says volunteers are the ones that get things done around us and their work should be recognised.
“As a local board, we acknowledge and appreciate the hard work these volunteers put in to help our locals. They bring immense value to our communities and the increasing number of nominations each year shows that people recognise their contribution and want to thank them for all they do.”
