The Waitematā Local Board is contributing funding to a project initiated by MOTAT that will see a new walk and cycleway connecting Great North Road to Meola Road.
MOTAT’s Chief Executive Michael Frawley says they had initially planned to build a carpark at their Meola Road site to provide dedicated parking for visitors with a rudimentary walk and cycleway included.
“When the local board heard about our plans, they wanted to support us with additional funds to upgrade the proposed walk and cycleway. The local board’s contribution also enables us to incorporate lighting, cameras and bee-friendly plant boxes into the cycleway,” he said.
The local board contributed $130,000 to the project from their Local Board Transport Capital Fund (LBTCF). A legacy Parking Fund of $270,829 allowed a total contribution of $400,829.
While some elements of the funding are subject to Governing Body approval, the project is expected to start in February 2020.
In addition to the MOTAT section, the local board allocated a further $200,000 from their LBTCF to a cycleway on Motions Road. This additional contribution fully funds the project at a total of $690,000.
The Motions Road cycleway will deliver a kilometre of greenway connecting the planned Pt Chevalier Cycleway to Western Springs Park, Auckland Zoo, TAPAC, MOTAT and Seddon Fields. It will also improve access for students going to Western Springs College.
The work complements the local board’s Greenways Plan, which envisages a connection between Meola Road and Motions Road through Seddon Fields.
